The “#1″ DJ in the world releases his first LP
It seems Hardwell causes a rift in the electronic world. When he was barely getting noticed during the Spaceman era, playing at festivals like Coachella & Ultra, it seemed like Hardwell was the next in line to take the throne. His name was becoming synonymous with the growing popularity of “EDM”.
2 consecutive #1 spots in DJ Mags Top 100, a slew of main stage headlines, residency in Las Vegas, his very own worldwide arena tour and Hardwell was a bonafide superstar.
Why the hate then? There are always those who simply don’t like an artist because they have made it. Listening to someone before they hit the big stage is like knowing a secret everybody wants to know but you don’t spill the beans. In this case though, Hardwell is what some see as the problem with the scene. Making the music more of a “McDonalds” process than an art form. With United We Are, Hardwell had a chance to remind everyone he wasn’t just a “pop DJ”, catering to the tweens anymore.
If the spaceman could talk, he would say “mission failed”.
From the get go, listening to Follow Me, Let Me Be Your Home & Colors you know you’re in for a slew of progressive heavy tunes. Not a problem, but when your drops offer little variation and that “wow” factor is missing, the tracks become just another track you’ll soon be pressing skip on your playlist. Arcadia was a hit this past summer, rightfully being played and remixed all across the globe, but even Arcadia suffers in the album once you listen to Sally which has a similar sound and drum pattern to it. Don’t Stop The Madness was first played at last years Ultra and it sounded great. But sure enough, some executive probably thought it was a great idea to get Fat Man Scoop in there to have some main stream appeal, basically ruining the track for electronic fans. It wouldn’t be right if the #1 DJ in the world didn’t try to dab into the fad of the momement, “future house”; Where Is Here Now covers that area.
There are some stand outs in the album, United We Are offers a nice synth with a taste of trance, Birds Fly have amazing vocals by Mr. Probz, Echo has a distinct fat sound to it not heard in any other track and the sheer amount of features is impressive for any electronic DJ.
It’s not that we don’t like the album, it’s that we don’t love it. Tracks have grown on me after a few listens but they are not going to make my most played list. Hardwell will continue to evolve and put on great shows, no doubt. Can’t wait to listen to what he has in store for us.
